CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Peter Nureyev/whatever fun alias he picks out for himself here in Ryslig
Canon: The Penumbra Podcast
Canon Point: A handful of months following “The Final Resting Place”
Character Information: Here, which defines his past and the first arc in part. Juno ultimately discovers Glass's attempts to steal the mask and arrests him, but he escapes -- though not before revealing his real name.

As Juno pursues a string of deaths and thefts surrounding more Martian artifacts, he finds himself allied with Nureyev once again. Nureyev has been working with Miasma to steal said artifacts, though he's decided he no longer wishes to help her. Together, they work to board the Utgard Express, a treasure trove of priceless artifacts aboard a train moving nearly faster than the naked eye can process.

Though they're successful, Miasma finds out about Nureyev's deceit and heads them off. The two are kidnapped, and Nureyev is used as collateral as Miasma tries to recreate the mind reading mass inside Juno's head. Eventually, Peter frees himself and Juno, and together they face off against and ultimately kill Miasma, though not without nearly losing Juno in the process. Juno agrees to start a new life with Nureyev off-planet, and they spend the night together. the last we see of Nureyev is when Juno walks out on him in the middle of the night, abandoning their plans.

Personality:

As Nureyev grew up, Mag Ransom fashioned him into a teenage revolutionary, following the path of the story he believed to be his father. Much like Robin Hood, the young Peter Nureyev wanted "the wealthy to fear me and those in need to call for me.” However, Nureyev is rather indiscriminate in the lives that he takes, striking down anyone affiliated with the Guardian Angel System.

As Nureyev's own morals shift and loosen, this self-righteous mentality shifts into one of self-importance. When his mission to board the Utgard Express brings him head-to-head with Brock Engstrom, it becomes clear that Nureyev's interest in the retired jewel thief is a little more petty than anything else. He looks down on Engstrom for besmirching the art of thievery, calling him smug, a sham of a burglar and claiming that the Ruby7 -- the best getaway car known to man -- is wasted on the other thief. Much like those associated with the Guardian Angel System, Engstrom’s employees are regarded with disdain for their association and would have very nearly been run over and killed by Nureyev, if not for Juno’s interference.

There still seems to be some vestiges of that early self-righteousness still kicking around in Nureyev's code. When he and Juno are discussing what to do with the Egg of Purus, he remarks that “these things are better in our hands than Miasma’s… Mars will be safer for what we’ve done here.”

While those affiliated with those he deems wicked meet no mercy, he refuses to endanger the innocent. Where Mag considers the innocent lives that will be lost with the fall of New Kinshasa to be a worthy sacrifice, Nureyev refuses to let that happen. He's willing to go as far as killing his loved ones if it means upholding his morals, strange and loose as they may be.

In addition to his moral superiority, Nureyev does have something of a vain streak as well. Not only does he know that he's pretty, but he knows that other people know it as well, at one point telling Juno that “my head is perfectly-sized, and we both know it.” He communicates with eloquence, speaking with big words about even bigger ideals. However, he isn’t particularly stuck-up, and is more than capable of exchanging both jabs, jokes and barbs with Juno and others. This self-confidence naturally extends to himself, describing himself as "the best there is." Some of this self-confidence stems into a bit of theatricality. He claims to be the best, and artfully shows this by stealing Blair Rockridge's entire collection in front of her eyes. Rather than simply explaining his mission on the Utgard Express to Juno, he brings the man out to watch the impossibly fast train whizz by before their eyes.

Careful planning is key to success in his field, and Nureyev knows it. His heists are well researched and executed equally as well. He claims to have taken the time to have memorized the floorplan of the Kanagawa Mansion, and in fact seems to have done so as he is able to locate the door to a secret room when his and Juno’s lives depend on it. He possesses enough general knowledge to be able to stitch Juno up after being grievously injured in their confrontation with Cecil Kanagawa. When asked about a plan for escaping the Oasis Casino, he remarks that he has four, and that he “wouldn’t be much of a burglar if he didn’t.” He’s able to effortlessly navigate service corridors and garbage chutes by memory in order for Juno and himself to reach their destination. Whether it’s public record, in the case of Juno’s exams for the Hyperion City Police Department, or closely guarded secrets, such as information on the near-mythical Utgard Express, Peter Nureyev has his fingers in it, and will use the information to his advantage.

Nureyev is quick on his feet and has an even quicker pair of hands. He has an escape plan at the ready, telling Juno to give him an hour and thirty-seven minutes to escape if he plans on setting off the bomb. After giving away his name and essentially losing everything on Brahma, Nureyev quickly made himself a new name and escaped into the sunset.

That isn't to say that Nureyev is helpless when a plan goes awry, of course. He's a quick thinker, capable of spinning a lie to save the day at the drop of a hat. When he and Juno are apprehended by Engstrom on the Utgard Express, he convinces the man and his assistant that the tv remote pulled from his pocket is the key to stopping the train. It buys him and Juno enough time to escape from their clutches. Later, when Juno asked if it was all planned out, Nureyev explains that he'd simply accidentally pocketed the remote and forgotten about it.

Also working to his advantage is how easily Nureyev takes things in stride. Whether he’s fending off an outburst from Juno or risking it all in a high stakes card game, Peter Nureyev, as Juno puts it, looks “bored, with a half-smile like he was humoring the world, waiting for it to do something worth his attention again.” Even when being pursued relentlessly by Engstrom’s lackies, Nureyev is calm enough formulate a plan and even patronize Juno a little. Later, when both he and Juno fall into Miasma’s clutches, he remains unperturbed, popping off little quips  when he has four guns aimed at him and when he’s being consistently tortured by the woman. He remains optimistic when locked miles below ground with no hope of escape, leaving Juno to wonder how the hell he remains so bright.

Nureyev is inquisitive, sometimes to a fault. For better or for worse, this curiosity has put him at odds with other characters, such as Juno or his surrogate father, Mag. While his ramblings to Juno led only to severe annoyance and exasperation, the latter case led to a much more grave consequence. His fascination with what he believed to be latent memories about New Kinshasa leads Mag to reveal that the story Nureyev had been told about his origins-- that his father was a rebel working to bring the authoritarian governance ruling over his home planet of Brahma -- had been a lie.

On the flip side, his inquisitive nature plays to his advantage when he takes on the role of Dark Matters investigator Rex Glass.

One of Nureyev's defining traits, one that ties at least both Rex Glass and Duke Rose together, is a need to always pursue newer and better things. Since leaving Brahma, Nureyev has drifted from star to star, planet to planet, and identity to identity. He is a thief without a home, and has grown into this nomadic lifestyle. Where Rose seeks new, thieving glory in a bigger pond, Glass (and by extension Nureyev) finds a beauty in each new, unknown destination. Ultimately, this puts himself and Juno at odds -- where Nureyev wants to leave and move on, as he is wont to do, Juno feels a continued obligation to Mars (among other, tragic things).
